Chimamanda Adichie
The danger of a single story
The speech was delivered by Chimamanda Adichie at the Ted Global 2009 conference in Oxford. Chimamanda Adichie is a novelist from Nigeria. In the audience there were people who wanted to hear wise words from powerful people. The speakers were doctors, lawyers, scientist, and teachers. A quote that stood out to me is when she said:
"She asked if she could listen to what she called my "tribal music," and was consequently very disappointed when I produced my tape of Mariah Carey."
Reading this quote made me realize that Chimamanda Adichie is like a normal American girl that listens to Mariah Carey and goes to the mall. I thought this because American people listen to Mariah Carey and I thought African people really listen crazy music. This also made me realize that Nigerian people don't only listen to weird tribal music. Chimamanda Adichie surprised me wen she said she listen to Mariah Carey.
Another quote that stood out to me was when Chimamanda Adichie said: "I was startled. It had not occurred to me that anybody in his family could actually make something. All I had heard about them was how poor they were, so that it had become impossible for me to see them as anything else but poor."
Reading this quote made me realize that stereotyping is going on all around the world. When Chimamanda Adichie's mom told her that Fide's family was poor she thought they were not capable of doing anything. If I was told that someone was poor I would also feel sorry for them and think they were capable of nothing. I was not surprised when Chimamanda Adichie said this because everyone would think the same thing.
Another quote that stood out to me was when Chimamanda Adichie said: "My American roommate was shocked by me. She asked where I had learned to speak English so well."
Reading this quote made me realize that this is another stereotype people say about African people. Chimamanda Adichie said that English is the normal language of Africa. I actually thought that African people spoke a weird language as if they were just making random noises. This really surprised me when she said this. From Chimamanda Adichie's speech I learned that most things we think we know about people are just stereotype.

Dead Animal Combo Meal
The issue that inspired this picture is killing animals and serving them as food. In the picture there is a fast food meal that is called a "Dead Animal Combo Meal". The technique the artist used was labeling. From the image I can infer that the artist was a vegeterian. I can also infer that the artist wants people to stop eating meat. The message of the picture is not to eat meat. Vegeterians would agree with the picture and fast food owners would disagree with the picture. The artist is for the message of the image. This cartoon is persausive because if you called it dead meat no one would want to eat them thats why they are called hamburgers. I know i wouldnt want to eat something called dead meat.
Cancer Sticks
The issue that inspired the picture is smoking. In the picture there is a picture of a dead camel. The technique the artist used was labeling. From the picture I can infer that they are trying to imitate the camel brand of cigaretes. I can also infer that they are saying that cigaretes can cause cancer. Cancer kills you so they are saying cigarrets gives you a one way ticket to death. Basically the picture is saying not to smoke cigaretts
because they can kill you. The Camel company would disagree because if people stop smoking the company will sell no cigaretts. The artist is against smoking because from the pictures you can infer that they are saying cigaretts can kill you. If I knew cigaretts could kill me I would not smoke them. This makes the picture persausive because nobody would want to die.
Nike Victim
The issue in the picture is that a kid has stitches in the pattern of a nike check on his face. This was inspired by the shoe frenzies taking places over the world. Many people are being killed or seriously injured over shoes. This artist use the technique of symbolism to express this picture. From the picture I can infer that not only in certain states but all over the United States they are having shoe frenzies and people are being injured. I can also infer that Nike is one of the brand of shoes that are causing the shoe frenzies. True victims of nike would agree the picture because they have experienced what can happen in a shoe frenzie. The artist is against Nike because the title of the picture is "Nike Victim". This picture is persausive because they have a picture a sad kid with stitches on his face.
A Tale Of Two Indias
There is an economic disparity in India because half of India is educated and have good jobs the other half is uneducated with bad jobs.A caste system is a system of social classes. Many of the people on the poor side of India wanted to move to the other side to get an education and a good job. Both countries are ran by a controlling government. Both countries are changing into governments that are more free with opportunities for growth.
To emerge as a global power means to grow economically. India now has an educated job force so it can be used by other countries. In the past 20 years, the government began to turn away from socialism and loosen regulations. The size of India's middle class has doubled because many citizens are migrating to the cities for education and better jobs.
The growing gap between the poor and middle class might lead to the poor becoming more poor. More people are getting educated so the poor will be left behind with no support.International companies have relocated to India because the workers are now trained, educated and work for less. They do this to save money and still get quality work. After Civil War and the First World War our country went through a transformation that is similar to that in India. The citizens had opportunities to better themselves and their families.
My Analysis On Dr. Kings Dream
Being Online
People spend so much of their time on activities because, they are distracted by social technology. I spend about half of my day texting, about thirty minutes on facebook and other social websites, and about thirty minutes surfing the web. I do think that these activities interfere with other parts of my life because, I am easily distracted. Cellphones and computers become a problem when you cant ignore them. One of the warning signs are when you spend more than half of your day doing these activities. These activities affect your focus because you may be studying then hear your phone ring and easily get distracted. Twitter, facebook, and texting are different types of instant gratification. This is good and bad because, it is a way to communicate but it is also a distraction. People can learn lots of things from the internet is how to type and research. Updates are good conversations to have through texting. Personal conversations are meant to be done in person. Our school lets us have cellphones at school but we may not take them out or use the.
